LAST SWTEC ANNUAL
MEETING
(Aug-2008)
A warm evening with
a light breeze made almost perfect conditions for Southwest Texas Electric
Cooperative's 63rd Annual Meeting. A crowd of over 950 enjoyed a barbecue meal
with all the trimmings at 7:00 p.m. The business meeting began at 8:00 pm with
State Representative Harvey Hilderbran from Kerrville being introduced
Representative Hilderbran spoke briefly
to the crowd, praising Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative’s management team
for taking care of business. |
 |
 |
Hilderbran continued with
reassuring news that Governor Rick Perry and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst
along with the Legislative Budget Board have committed to providing
reimbursement to Schleicher county for unexpected expensed incurred as a result
of the YFZ raid early in the year
Hilderbran noted
that Texas’s economy was doing pretty darn good in comparison to the nation,
noting Texas’ two billion dollar surplus. Representative Hilderbran went on to
discuss the abundance of wind energy in Texas and our likely domination of that
renewable resource. Referencing the fact that the wind doesn’t always blow, he
suggested our ready availability of natural gas as a backup to help solve our
(state) energy problems.
|
|
Board President
Steve Williams took a few minutes to report on Southwest Texas Electric
Cooperative’s continued effort to secure generation assets for the membership.
He informed the members that wind continues to offer promise for our energy
challenges. Williams went on to speak of the importance of pooling with our
fellow Golden Spread Cooperative members to secure our own power generation
assets, noting that purchasing power on the spot market can be very expensive. |
 |
Williams continued
by discussing the recent Public Utility Commission of Texas’ plan to build
transmission power lines in West Texas in order to move power produced by the
numerous wind farms back to the Metroplex. Williams noted that at times the
existing wind turbines do not have a place to go with their power because of
transmission line congestion
Jerry Johnson, board
secretary, read the proof of notice and declared a quorum for the annual
meeting. Mr. Johnson reported a total of 223 members had registered by the
beginning of the business session. The minutes from the 2007 meeting were
approved as reported in the annual report.
|
Buff Whitten, General Manager of Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative, reminded
everyone that as a member, they own the cooperative. Whitten encouraged the
members to review the financial data located in the annual report and to call
their cooperative if they would like any additional information. He concluded by
informing members if they were interested in small, home wind generators, to
please contact the cooperative prior to any purchase decisions so we can provide
them with information.
Whitten then turned the meeting over to Attorney, Tom Gregg, for the election of
directors. After informing the members of the bylaws provision regarding
elections, he asked nominating committee chairperson June Heck to give the
nominating committee report. |
Ms. Heck reported the committee nominated
incumbent directors Richard Runge, Jerry Johnson, and Eugene Vision. After
asking for nominations from the floor, a motion was made to cease nominations
and a subsequent motion was made and seconded to
re-elect the
nominees by acclamation. The motion passed.
Director Sam Henderson stepped forward
to present service awards. Those receiving recognition: 30 years of
service. Paul Rebuck,
crew chief ;
25 years
of service, Armando Flores, crew chief, Tommy Minor , office manager;
10 years
of service: Manuel Samaniego, residential
wireman, Gloria Safont, software engineering director and Phil Edmiston,
master electrician. |
 |
Andrea Meador, daughter of Gloria
Safont and Stan Meador drew for over 50 donated door prizes. J.B. Miller
of Ozona won the grand prize, a 27-inch color television.
